Robert Motherwell Early Collages

details
Guggenheim
New York

After a trip to Mexiko in 1941 and under the tutorial of Roberto Matta Motherwell started the cutting, tearing, layering and glueing of decorative and special papers, maps, wooden veneers and textile pieces, painting them with the mastering of pastel colours... with fire oranges, ochre and golden yellows, dark blood reds, ultramarine and cobalt blues, mortal greys... light and dark tones... shiny and matt surfaces... he created a dark and raw abstract collage art with a touch of surrealist improvisatory technique.

Body-Stich

"Human body rising up and diving down in the passing time, then resurfacing again in memory: up and down, up and down, like needle connecting frayed layers of past and present.
And everything gets sewn together but the thread is invisible."
